About the Compound

SS-31 (Elamipretide)

SS-31 (Elamipretide / MTP-131) is a water-soluble tetrapeptide that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds to cardiolipin — a phospholipid critical for maintaining membrane architecture and the efficiency of the electron transport chain. By stabilising cardiolipin and reducing mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, SS-31 protects mitochondrial cristae structure and restores ATP synthesis capacity. It is being investigated across a wide range of conditions associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, including heart failure, age-related muscle loss, and metabolic disease.
