Bacteriostatic water, commonly referred to as BAC water, is sterile water that contains a small amount of benzyl alcohol (typically 0.9% by volume). The benzyl alcohol acts as a preservative, inhibiting the growth of bacteria. This makes BAC water suitable for use in multi-dose research applications where a vial may be accessed more than once.

In peptide research contexts, BAC water is commonly used to reconstitute lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptide compounds. Lyophilisation extends the shelf life of peptides in their solid form; reconstitution in an appropriate sterile solution prepares them for research use. The bacteriostatic preservative maintains the solution's sterility over the multi-dose use period.
